Frequently Asked Questions

How deep do you grind the stump?

We typically grind stumps to around 200–300 mm (8–12 inches) below ground level, which is enough for re-turfing or planting most lawns and gardens. If you plan to pave, build over, or plant a new tree in the same spot, we can grind deeper on request.

What about the roots?

Stump grinding removes the visible stump and the upper section of the root flare. The deeper lateral roots are left in the ground and break down naturally over a few years. For most landscaping and lawn purposes this is more than sufficient — full root excavation is rarely necessary unless you are building foundations.

What is left behind after grinding?

You are left with a pile of fine wood chip and soil where the stump used to be. We can rake this back into the hole as a free fill, take it away, or leave it on site for you to use as mulch — your choice.
