It depends on the tree. You generally do not need consent to remove an ordinary tree on private property. However, trees listed on the Dunedin City Council Significant Tree Register, or trees protected by a District Plan rule (for example certain natives or trees over a specified size in some zones), require resource consent. Stump grinding is a separate service that we offer alongside removal. It is usually cheaper and tidier to do both in the same visit than to come back later. If you plan to plant or pave over the area, grinding is recommended.
